We believe our scholars are excellent and we push them to do their best academically. We also believe that there is more to academic excellence that just strong grades and test scores. We work to build the love of learning in our scholars and empower them to use what they learn to make their world a better place.
What is Academic Excellence to us? Academic excellence is when a student goes beyond passing the test and adopts the lesson into their real life examples. It is when they embrace academics to the point where they understand and can explain how subjects (like math, science, world history, and physical education) apply to daily life. Finally, academic excellence includes learning how to navigate the educational system in order to achieve career goals.
- Goal Setting & Checking – Dreaming Big is an important part of the early years in TVM. Without dreams and goals associated with them, we’ve noticed the youth of our community who have big dreams with supportive adults achieve amazing things for themselves, families and community. We want to see more of our youth making big dreams and receiving opportunities to make them happen.
- Collaboration – TVM believes in a collaborative approach to working with youth achieve their academic goals. We meet with families, the schools, and our partners to learn about the scholars strengths and challenges and look for opportunities to provide scaffold learning
- Exposure – We expose our scholars to mentors in the world of business, STE(A)M, health and wellness, and high school and college aged students. In order to dream big sometimes means having access to people who are currently living out similar dreams
We believe that in order for our youth to achieve academic excellence, it will take a village method (a collaborative approach) by engaging various partners who are working specifically to develop and maintain excellence among Black scholarship.
