About The Village Method

The Village Method is about empowering youth, engaging families, and building stronger communities through culturally rooted programs.

About The Village Method

The Village Method (TVM) is more than an after school program—it’s a movement. Founded by husband-and-wife team Mark and Mahea Gaskins, TVM was created to empower youth, engage families, and strengthen entire communities. With over two decades of experience, the Gaskins have dedicated their lives to building culturally responsive, connected communities that uplift the next generation.

We partner with school districts, families, and local organizations to bridge the opportunity gap for students who are often overlooked. By providing holistic support—academic enrichment, leadership development, and cultural empowerment—we ensure that young people have the tools to succeed in school, thrive in their careers, and return as leaders who reinvest in their communities.

What We Do

  • Empower Families – We believe that when families are engaged, students achieve more. Our programs provide resources, mentorship, and advocacy to help families navigate the education system.
  • Partner with Schools – We work directly with educators, administrators, and school districts to enhance student success through after-school programs, mentorship, and professional development.
  • Build Stronger Communities – By collaborating with local businesses, government agencies, and cultural institutions, we create a supportive ecosystem where youth and families can thrive.

Why It Matters

As the African proverb says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” We know that real change happens when communities come together. That’s why The Village Method creates intentional connections between young people and the leaders who shape their world—ensuring every child sees themselves as a valuable part of their community’s future.

Our History

The Village Method began, as most movements do, with a simple yet profound commitment to community. Pastor George M. Gaskins Jr. of Bethel Baptist Church in Union City, California, dedicated his life to the young people around him—offering scholarships, mentorship, and a safe space where children felt seen, valued, and supported. His work laid the foundation for what would become a much larger mission.

For years, families gathered, and young minds were nurtured, but outside the church walls, challenges persisted. Disconnection, racial tensions, and systemic barriers left too many young people vulnerable. Then, in 2007, tragedy struck.

Vernon Eddins Jr., a 14-year-old boy, was murdered. His death was the result of escalating racial bullying, an issue that had gone unaddressed for far too long. In the aftermath, the community found itself unable to respond, paralyzed by division and uncertainty. The systems meant to protect children had failed him, and the disconnect between families, schools, and local institutions became painfully clear.

This moment ignited a call to action.

Husband-and-wife team Mark and Mahea Gaskins, deeply rooted in community service, knew that real change required going beyond the walls of the churchAs the son of Pastor George Gaskins, Mark witnessed firsthand the power of a connected community and the impact of serving others. Together, he and Mahea carried forward this legacy, expanding the work beyond the church to build a village of support for youth and families. With this vision, The Village Method (TVM) was founded—to rebuild the soul of connectivity that once held communities together.

Restoring the Village, Rebuilding the Soul

The Village Method is built on the understanding that no child succeeds alone. Rooted in Cultural Ecological Systems Theory, TVM recognizes that young people thrive when families, schools, faith communities, businesses, and cultural institutions work together.

At its core, TVM creates spaces where youth feel safe, affirmed, and supported. The work focuses on bridging the gaps that isolate students and families, ensuring that no child falls through the cracks. By strengthening family engagement, partnering with schools, and connecting youth to opportunities, The Village Method restores the deep-rooted sense of belonging that every child deserves.

The Work Continues

What began as a small gathering of concerned community members has grown into a movement that has impacted thousands of students and families. Today, The Village Method continues to empower youth, engage parents, and unite entire communities in the shared mission of ensuring every child has the support needed to thrive.

The work is ongoing, and the village is still growing. Educators, families, community leaders, and partners all play a role in ensuring that children are not only safe but positioned for lifelong success.
